Crossover subs are generally Box x Pin with a transition on the outside diameter and the inside diameter of the crossover sub to assure that there are no sharp corners to set up an area of stress risers. When stress risers occur, there is a chance that the part could fail due to the fact that the part would be prone to crack in these areas.
